Apple has reportedly enhanced its iCloud for Windows client by introducing support for a two-factor authentication (2FA) code generator. This functionality is accessible through the iCloud Passwords app, allowing users to utilize passwords stored in iCloud Keychain on their Windows PCs. The 2FA codes offer an extra layer of security for user logins on websites or apps. With this update, iCloud for Windows users no longer need to rely on third-party applications to generate 2FA codes on their PCs.
According to a report from 9To5Mac, a Reddit user initially discovered the 2FA code generator in the latest version of the iCloud Passwords app, integrated into iCloud for Windows. This feature was reportedly first introduced in iCloud Keychain with iOS 15 and macOS Monterey. Additionally, users with Windows operating systems using Chrome or Edge browsers can now benefit from the 2FA code generator.
However, individuals using alternative browsers such as Mozilla Firefox may still need to use third-party applications like 1Password and LastPass for seamless functionality. Otherwise, they may need to open the iCloud Passwords utility each time they require a 2FA code with iCloud Keychain.
The report also notes that this update includes a new feature allowing Windows users to add and view notes associated with their iCloud Keychain passwords, a feature reportedly already present in the iOS version of the app. iCloud Passwords on Windows could serve as a viable free alternative to other password managers. This functionality is part of the iCloud for Windows client, available for free download from the Microsoft Store, with a requirement for the PC to run on Windows 10 or a higher version.
